(으)려다가 [Intermediate Grammar]

- (으)려다가

→ It means a speaker was meant to do an action of a preceding clause, but unlike his purpose, it has been changed to the other action of a latter clause.'

Example: 

1. 그는 뭔가 말을 하려다가 그만두는 눈치였어요.

He was trying to say something but seemed to give up.

2. 레슬링 경기 도중 한 선수가 상대편 선수를 쓰러뜨리려다가 오히려 자기가 쓰러졌습니다. 

While wrestling, a player was trying to knock down the other opponent but he was knocked
down instead.

3. 갑자기 날씨가 추워져서 꽃이 피려다 말았다.
The weather is getting cold out of the blue. So the flowers were about to come into bloom,
but now they can't.

4. 주차비 아끼려다가 오히려 돈을 더 쓰게 됐어요.

I was trying to save money on parking, but I ended up spending more money.

5. 너 살 빼려다가 병난다. 먹어 가면서 해라.

You get sick trying to lose weight. should eat it
