It is to express the fact that two things are opposites, which is added to a modifier of a verb or an adjective '-(으)ㄴ/는/던'

Example: 

1. 우리 형은 성격이 내성적인 반면에 저는 좀 외향적인 편이에요.

     While my brother is introverted, I'm rather extroverted.

2. 고려 시대에는 청자가 일반적이었던 반면에 조선 시대에는 백자가 일반적이었습니다.
    While celadon porcelains were common in the Goryeo Dynasty, white porcelains we common in the Joseon Dynasty.

3. 그 사람은 일은 잘하는 반면에 대인 관계에서는 평판이 좋지 않아요.

    While he is good at his job, he has a bad reputation in interpersonal relationships.

4. 그 회사는 월금이 많은 반면에 늦게까지 일을 시켜요.

    The company has a lot of monthly payments, but they work late.

5.아이가 공부는 잘하는 반면에 예능에는 소질이 없는 것같아요.

    While the child is good at studying, it seems that he is not good at entertainment.
