(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다[알았다] Korean grammar- Intermediates

Usage:

- (으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다[알았다]: 예상이 틀렸을 때 사용하는 문법

These two grammar are used when thoughts or expectations are wrong. it expresses the speaker's realization that his or her assumption was incorrect.

→ An incomplete noun '줄' meaning 'an intention or a situation' is connected to a modifier of '-(으) ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ' and it means a subject took a certain fact wrong and realized the truth now."

Example: 

1. 처음에 미숙 씨 얼굴만 보고 중국 사람인 줄 알았어요.
When I just saw Misuk's face at first, I thought she is Chinese.

2. 오지 않을 줄 알았는데 오셨군요.
 I thought you. didn't come, but you made it.

3. 이제까지 그 친구가 죽은 줄 알고 있었어요.
 I thought that friend was dead until now.

Conversation 1

ㄱ: 민수 씨,왜 숙제를 안 하셨어요?

ㄴ: 오늘 숙제가 있었어요? 저는 숙제가 있는 줄 몰랐어요. 숙제가 없는 줄 았아어요.

A: Minsu, why don't you do your homework?

B: Did we have homework for today? I did not know there was homework. I think there is no homework.

Conversation 2

ㄱ: 시진 씨 남편을 보셨어요? 정말 멋있던데요.

ㄴ: 시진 씨가 결혼을 했어요? 저는 시진 씨가 결혼한 줄 몰랐어요. 결혼 안 한 줄 았아요.

A: Have you seen Si-jin's husband? It was really cool.

B: Is Sijin married? I didn't know that Si-jin was married. I thought she was never married.

Conversation 3

ㄱ: 길이 막히는데 왜 택시를 탔어요?

ㄴ: 저는 길이 안 막힐 줄 알았어요.

A: The road is blocked, so why did you take a taxi?

B: I thought the road wouldn't block.

Conversation 4

ㄱ: 날씨가 추운데 왜 반바지를 입었어요?

ㄴ: 저는 날씨가 안 추울 줄 알았어요.

A: Why are you wearing short pants when the weather is cold?

B: I thought the weather wouldn't be cold.

1.인터넷 뱅킹이 이렇게 편리할 줄 몰랐다.

I never thought Internet banking would be so convenient.

2.수신 씨가 매운 음식을 그렇게 잘 먹을 줄 몰랐다.

I didn't know that Mr. Soo-jin could eat spicy food so well.

3. 인터넷으로 주문한 상품이 오늘 배송될 줄 알았다. 그런데 아직 안 왔다.

I thought the product I ordered online would be delivered today. But it hasn't arrived yet.

4.저는 신주 씨가 한국 사람인 줄 몰랐어요. 일본 사람인 줄 알았어요.

I didn't know Shinju was Korean. I thought he was Japanese.

5.민나 씨 학생일 줄 알았아요. 그런데 선생님일 줄 몰랐어요.

I thought she was Minna's student. But she didn't know she was a teacher.

6. 오늘 비가 올 줄 몰랐어요.

I didn't know it was going to rain today.

7. 컴퓨터가 이렇게 비쌀 줄 몰랐어요.

I didn't expect computers to be this expensive.

8. 김치가 이렇게 매울 줄 몰랐어요.

I didn't know kimchi could be this spicy.
