자면 [Intermediate Grammar]

 -  자면

→ It is added to the stem of a verb supposing one's intention meaning 'if it will be so in the future.' It has a similar meaning to '-(으)려면,' while '-(으)려면' is used without limit, '자면' is used to tell the general truth when a person becomes a subject.

Example: 

1. 가수로 성공하자면 매니저를 잘 만나야 합니다.
In order to succeed as a singer, you should meet a good manager.

2. 이 공사를 한 달 안에 끝내자면 날씨가 좋아야 할 텐데………….
In order to get this construction work done in a month, the weather should be good...

3. 누구나 꿈을 이루자면 그만큼 노력이 필요합니다.
In order to make our dreams come true, we should try much harder.

*It is an idiomatic expression as follows and it is used to mean 'if it is (explained in the way)."

Example: 

1. 솔직히 말하자면 저는 의사가 되고 싶지 않았습니다. 

To tell you the truth, I don't want to be a doctor.

2. 한마디로 말하자면 이건 최악입니다. In short, this is the worst.

3. '정'이란 쉽게 설명하자면 한국적인 사랑입니다.

 To explain easily, '정' is the Korean way of love

4. 좋은 자리를 맡자면 새벽부터 줄을 서야 할 거예요.

If you want to get a good seat, you'll have to line up from dawn.

5. 대기업에 취직하자면 학교 성적이 좋아야 합니다.

If you want to get a job at a large company, you must have good grades in school.

 6. 잔치라는 단어의 의미는 쉽게 설명하자면 한국식 파티라고 할 수 있어요.

  The meaning of the word banquet can be easily explained as a Korean-style party.
