- 든지 -든지 Korean Intermediate Grammar

Usage:

- 든지 -든지  This expression is used when expressing that any of the stated choices are fine. In this case, there need to be at least two choices given. They can be either a simple listing of two or more choices or two opposing or contradictory options. This expression can also be shortened to '- 든 -든' and be translated as 'whether… or... ~expressing any choices are fine

→ If the form '든지'(refer to Elementary 2, Lesson 3) expressing the choice is added to a stem of a verb or an adjective more than two times, it indicates 'it doesn't matter which one is chosen.' The choice of affirmation or negation for the same verb becomes the form of 든지 말든지."

Adjective: A-든지 -든지

예쁘다    ----------->     예쁘든지

귀엽다    ----------->     귀엽든지

Verb: V-든지 -든지 (Present)  or V-았/었든지 -았/었든지 (Past)

먹다     ----------->     먹든지    ----------->    먹었든지

마시다----------->     마시든지    ----------->    마셨든지

Noun: N-(이)든지

밥    ----------->     밥이든지   

죽     ----------->     죽이든지    

주스     ----------->     주스든지    

커피     ----------->     커피든지   

 Example:

1. 이쪽으로 가든지 저쪽으로 돌아가든지 시간은 마찬가지예요.
     Whether you go this way or that way, it takes the same time.

2. 그 사람이 죽었든지 살았든지 저하고는 상관없는 일이에요. 
    Whether he is dead or alive, it doesn't matter to me.

3. 밥은 차려 놓았으니까 먹든지 말든지 마음대로 하세요.
     Since I set the table, it's up to you whether you eat or not.

Conversation 1  

가: 이 서류는 무엇으로 써야 합니까?

나: 볼페으로 쓰든지 연필로 쓰든지 마음대로 하세요.

A: What should I use to fill out this paperwork?

B: You can use whatever you want, such as a ballpoint pen or pencil.

Conversation 2

  

가: 책이 너무 비싸면 어떻에 하지요? 그래도 사다줄까요?

나: 네, 비싸든지 싸든지 필요한 책이니까 꼭 사다주세요.

A: What if the book is too expensive? Should I just buy it for you? 

B: Yes, I need the book regardless of whether it's expensive or cheap, so please get it for me.  

1. 이제 한국 음식은 맵든지 짜든지 모두 먹을 수 있어요.
I can now eat all kinds of Korean food, spicy or salty.

2. 눈이 오든지 비가 오든지 내일 공연은 예정대로 진행될 겁니다.

Regardless of whether it rains or snows, tomorrow's performance will continue as planned.

3.이제 한국 음식은 맵든지 짜든지 모두 먹을 수 있어요.

I can now eat all kinds of Korean food, spicy or salty. 

4. 제 남편은 평일이든지 주말이든지 시간만 나면 등산을 갑니다.

My husband goes hiking whenever he has time, no matter if it's the weekend or a weekday.

5. 저는 생일 선물이 크든지 작든지 상관없어요.

I don’t care whether my birthday gift is big or small.

✷ To emphasize the contrast between the two choices, the forms '-든지 안-든지', '든지 말든지'

and '-든지 못 -든지' is also used.

    ⯈ 네가 가든지 말든지 나는 상관없으니까 마음대로 해.

    It doesn't matter to me whether you go or not, so do as you wish. 

    ⯈ 그 사람이 키가 크든지 안 크든지 일단 한번 만나 보세.

    Regardless of whether he is tall or short, just meet him. 

✷ This expression cannot be used with -겠 -, which indicates a future event.

 

내일은 친구를 만나겠든지 영화를 보겠든지 할 거예요.(X)

내일은 친구를 만나든지 영화를 보든지 할 거예요.(O)
