→ It is an abbreviated form omitted'고 하' from an indirect speech form of '-(이)라고 합니다.' (refer to Intermediate 1, lesson 2) Indirect speech is usually used when another speaker's word is delivered or quoted. Like what is used here, it is used to explain or inform a certain fact to the other speaker kindly. '답니다', '-(느)ㄴ답니다' are variant forms. Especially a casual form of '-(이)란다' is also used when a senior gives a lesson to a child.
Example:
1. 전 살림밖에 모르는 평범한 주부랍니다.
I am an ordinary housewife knowing nothing but housekeeping.

2. 한국에는 추석, 설날말고도 대보름이란 명절도 있답니다.

Once upon a time, there was a pretty and sweet Snow White princess.
